Abnormal bleeding may be that the interval between periods changes, becoming more or less frequent. It may be that the amount of blood each time increases or decreases, or it may be bleeding that comes between periods.
About abnormal uterine bleeding
Bleeding disorders are a common reason women see a gynaecologist. They can range from very irregular periods to bleeding between periods, heavy bleeding or bleeding after intercourse.
It is important to assess bleeding disorders to rule out underlying disease. Fortunately there are often natural causes that can be treated simply and effectively.
Common causes of bleeding disorders include:
- Hormonal imbalance
- Menopause and perimenopause
- Pregnancy or pregnancy-related complications
- Sexually transmitted infections
- Polyps in the uterus or cervix
- Fibroids (myomas) in the uterus
Rarer causes include cell changes or cancer of the cervix, the uterine lining or other gynaecological conditions.
