Abnormal bleeding may be that the interval between periods changes, becoming more or less frequent. It may be that the amount of blood each time increases or decreases, or it may be bleeding that comes between periods.

Bleeding disorders can be that the interval between menstruations changes, that they become more frequent or less frequent.
Common causes include menopause, sexually transmitted infections, polyps or fibroids, pregnancy, or hormonal imbalances.
Bleeding that starts after _menopause_ must always be investigated, usually with ultrasound and a tissue sample from the uterine lining. Further follow-up depends on the result.
