Hormonal disorders refer to abnormal levels of hormones in the body, whether there is too much, too little, or uneven production of certain hormones. Read more below about various diseases.

Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is characterized by an imbalance in sex hormones. (Previously referred to as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).)

The diagnosis can prevent egg cells from maturing and lead to a lack of ovulation, which in turn can cause missed or infrequent periods. Women with PCOS may experience involuntary infertility more often and require assistance to become pregnant. Women with infrequent or absent periods should use contraception, or take pills 2–4 times a year to induce bleeding, to prevent the risk of endometrial cell changes that could eventually cause endometrial cancer.

Many also experience insulin resistance and have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus, as well as high cholesterol and blood pressure. The risk of cardiovascular disease also increases.

PCOS is not a specific endocrine disease, but a syndrome with various symptoms and signs. There is no specific test to diagnose it. A patient must meet 2 of the 3 following criteria to be diagnosed:

Irregular and infrequent periods
Polycystic ovaries
Hyperandrogenism (increased body hair, acne, and male-pattern hair loss)

There is no cure, but medications and treatments are available to manage and improve the condition.
