The stories no one talks about after birth

For many women, it is difficult to talk about problems after childbirth. "Astrid" (50) is one of many who finally found the help she needed from gynecologist Madeleine Engen.

Historiene ingen snakker om etter fødsel

For many women, it is difficult to talk about problems after childbirth. Injuries can be invisible to the outside, but still leave deep traces both physically and psychologically.

"Astrid" (50) is one of many who have experienced this, and who finally found the help she needed from our gynaecologist, Madeleine Engen.

In an article published in Nettavisen, "Astrid" tells of a long journey from birth injury to several operations, and how the meeting with Madeleine finally became the turning point. "Astrid" wishes to remain anonymous because of the shame she experiences that characterizes this type of health problem.

Many years of pain and invisible injuries

After the birth of her first child in 2000, she was told that the pain and discomfort she experienced were "completely normal". Even when the musculature inside was completely torn, she was met with advice on pinching exercises. Only after a private operation two years later did she get her life back - but the recommendation was that she had to undergo another operation later in life.

When she followed this advice in autumn 2024, the result was the opposite: The pain became worse than ever, and she ended up on crutches. For "Astrid", this was the start of a difficult period where everyday life felt impossible to handle.

    Found help at CMedical

In the winter of 2025, she came to CMedical, and met Madeleine Engen – a gynecologist with particular expertise in birth defects. For the first time in many years, she felt seen and understood.

    - She came to us as a very traumatized patient. Her injuries were so extensive that at first I thought she had never been operated on, says Madeleine.

Engen reconstructed the musculature in the mediastinum, so that the pelvic floor was once again supported and held. Already shortly after the operation, "Astrid" was able to put away the crutches.

The need for a boost in women's health

    - I want to tell my story because I know there are many more out there. Far too many women live with problems they shouldn't have, she says to Nettavisen.
    - Far too many women are trivialized or mistreated. We owe women more than this. Expertise in women's health must be strengthened, says Madeleine Engen.

At CMedical, we meet women every day with everything from birth defects to endometriosis and menopause. Our goal is to offer the highest professional competence and care, so that no one is left alone with their challenges.
