The prostate is a small gland located below the bladder. It produces fluid that mixes with sperm to form semen, and helps transport and protect sperm cells during ejaculation. Regular check-ups are important to detect and treat any prostate-related problems early.
About prostate
A prostate assessment with a urologist includes symptom scoring (IPSS), PSA measurement, clinical examination and ultrasound with measurement of prostate volume and residual urine. If cancer is suspected, an MRI is done before any targeted biopsy, so unnecessary tissue sampling is avoided. If sampling is needed, targeted prostate biopsies are performed transperineally using advanced Koelis technology, where MRI images are fused with real-time ultrasound. Benign enlargement is treated stepwise – from medication to TUR-P or robot-assisted surgery. Below you will find what the different examinations and treatments involve.
Many people naturally have higher or lower values than the average. That means the PSA blood test can show high values without it necessarily meaning you have prostate cancer. In the same way, the values can be low even if you do have prostate cancer. A full assessment and prostate check is needed to say anything with certainty.
A blood test alone is not enough, even though you can later monitor the prostate with one blood test a year. If you are over 50 or in a risk group, you should have a full prostate check annually. A prostate examination includes a PSA blood test, ultrasound of the prostate and a clinical examination.
PSA values need to be followed over time and compared with earlier findings. If PSA values rise in later blood tests, that can be a sign of prostate cancer, an enlarged prostate or inflammation of the prostate. In those cases further investigation is needed.
