A prostate examination consists of a PSA blood test and ultrasound of the prostate. It is also necessary to examine the prostate digitally through the rectum. This examination is called a digital rectal examination (DRE). The physician or urologist feels for the following:
- Nodular prostate gland
- Asymmetry
- Irregularities in the prostate gland
It is possible to have prostate examinations performed by your GP. However, an increasing number of men choose to consult a private urologist directly to check their prostate and ask questions about prostate cancer. If an annual prostate check indicates prostate cancer, an enlarged prostate, or inflammation, further investigation is required.
