Preputial problems are a quite common reason for men to seek a urologist. Phimosis can be congenital or acquired in adulthood. Common symptoms include difficulty retracting the foreskin over the glans. Sometimes, the condition is associated with redness of the skin and irritation. A clinical examination by a urologist forms the basis for diagnosis and treatment selection.

Treatment of phimosis

Treatment for tight foreskin can include the use of corticosteroid cream with or without antifungal medication.

Surgery of the foreskin

Treatment for a tight foreskin may involve either preputioplasty, where the foreskin is widened through a couple of incisions in the tight skin under local anesthesia, without removing the foreskin, or circumcision, where the foreskin is removed to expose the glans. The choice between these procedures is usually discussed with a urologist, who will evaluate the specific case and may start with a trial of cream and proceed to further measures if needed.
