IVF

No waiting time

In IVF, also known as in vitro fertilization or test-tube fertilization, the sperm fertilizes an egg outside the woman's body. The scientific term is "in vitro fertilization," hence the abbreviation IVF (in vitro = in glass and fertilization = conception).

IVF can be employed for all types of infertility and is currently the most effective method of assisted reproduction. The couple's own eggs and sperm can be used, or alternatively, donated sperm and/or eggs can be utilized.

The IVF Process Explained

During IVF, the woman is initially stimulated with hormones to mature multiple eggs. The eggs are then retrieved from the woman's ovaries as the doctor, guided by ultrasound, inserts a thin needle through the vagina into the ovaries. The man's sperm sample, or alternatively, donated sperm, is then prepared to isolate the best sperm.

Subsequently, the motile sperm and eggs are brought together in a culture dish for fertilization, or alternatively, ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is performed, where sperm is injected directly into the egg under a microscope. After 2-6 days, an embryo is transferred to the uterus. The remaining embryos are frozen and can be used if pregnancy is not achieved or for subsequent sibling treatments.

Under Treatment

Before initiating an IVF treatment, there is a review of the treatment schedule and injection technique with one of our midwives. The injections consist of hormones (FSH) that stimulate the growth of egg follicles. The treatment begins in conjunction with the menstrual cycle. On the fifth day of treatment, an additional injection is added to promote the maturation of the follicles. Finally, a shot is administered at a specified time, calculated based on ultrasound assessment. Its purpose is to trigger ovulation. The experience of the treatment varies; some may not feel anything, while others might experience fatigue, headaches, and some swelling around the abdomen.
